Megan stared out the window at the empty streets and flickering lamp post. When she arrived in town, she believed that she would have a fresh start, leaving her old life behind. However, that was far from the truth. In the short time Megan had spent at the Foxberry, the darkness of her past had continued to haunt her. She rarely left her little apartment on the fifth floor, paralyzed by the fear the someone on the outside was determined to hurt her. She knew she couldn't live like this forever. All Megan wanted was to feel safe.
"Something has to change" Megan thought to herself.
"Beep! Beep! Beep!" sounded the microwave, alerting Megan that her bowl of instant-ramen was finally finished cooking. She grabbed her bowl from the microwave, sat down on the couch, and flicked on the TV. Megan clicked through a couple of channels, stopping at the Channel 7 News. The remote fell from her hands, as she watched a picture of herself flash across the screen. Underneath the picture were the words, "MESSAGE FROM FAMILY OF MISSING GIRL: MEGAN MILLER".
Her mom appeared on the screen and began speaking. She was standing side by side with the rest of Megan's family. However, Megan's eyes were drawn to a man in the background. He was the one who had locked her up in the beginning. The one who had tormented and tortured her. The one who had treated her as if she was a lab rat. The one she resented for it all.
"Our daughter has been missing for weeks. We need her to come home. We don't know what to do without her." said Megan's mom.
Megan was enraged by the thought of that man being near her family. She knew that they were being threatened by him. They would never want to put her in harms way. They only wanted to protect her.
After a minute of sitting on the couch, Megan stood up and began packing her bag. She was going home. She shoved what little belongings she had into her duffle as quickly as she could, thinking of what she was going to do when she got there.
