Blog Post #6
It had been weeks since Noah had found out about her gift, and Megan had rarely left the house due to the fear of running into him. She regretted telling him, but there was nothing she could do about it now. Although she knew that she should trust him, given that he had a gift too, she couldn't help but fear that he would let word slip to the wrong people.
It was 8:24 p.m., and Megan was headed home, prepared to barricade herself in her room, just as she does every night. However, something seemed off. As she looked around her, she realized that the town was practically empty.
"How strange." Megan thought to herself.
Despite the emptiness of her surroundings, she could hear the faint sounds of laughter and applauding coming from a distance. The closer she got to home, the louder the sounds grew. She wondered what could be going on, and when she turned the corner she suddenly knew. A large, colorful tent with a sign that read, "The most spectacular show on earth!", stood before her.
"Ugh, the circus is here? I hate the circus." Megan muttered.
She kept walking with no intent to peek inside the tent. She hated the idea that the exploitation and abuse of animals could be seen as a form of entertainment. In spite of her determination to get as far from the tent as possible, she couldn't help but to be drawn to the sound of whimpering nearby. The whimpering subsided after a few minutes, but Megan was driven to find where it had been coming from. She searched behind bushes, under benches, and in alleyways surrounding the circus. After almost twenty minutes of searching, Megan lifted a large piece of cardboard and let out a sob at what she saw underneath.
A dead monkey lied before her. She assumed the monkey was a part of the circus. The cruel treatment he faced as an act had taken a toll on him, ultimately leaving him for dead. Megan kneeled down, placed both hands on the monkey, closed her eyes, and began to focus. In a matter of seconds the monkey sprang back to life. At the same time, she heard a splattering noise come from behind her. She turned and was now facing Jackie, who had dropped her drink in shock after what she just witnessed. Thoughts began racing through Megan's head as she worked to think of a way to explain what Jackie had seen.
Really good sentence (plot moving, develops character, really nice sentence)

One suggestion to develop character
What else is there to Megan’s character besides her gift? What are her hobbies or interests?
“After almost twenty minutes of searching, Megan lifted a large piece of cardboard and let out a sob at what she saw underneath. “
ReplyDeleteWhat are the consequences to her power? There must be some effect of her ability to raise the dead.
How long has she known about this power? She knew about it when she was with Tom but how often does she use it? How prevalent is it in her everyday life?
I think development of her relationship with Tom obviously but also her relationship with her family. Did they know about her powers?
“She turned and was now facing Jackie, who had dropped her drink in shock after what she just witnessed.”
