It was 8:00 p.m., and Megan had just finished her shift at the bed and breakfast. She was exhausted from hours of folding sub-par sheets and scrubbing out crud from behind toilets. Everyday while cleaning the rooms, she would gaze at her reflection in the mirrors and wonder how she ended up here. There was never a moment when thoughts of the life show could have lived didn't force their way into her head. She thought of how she should have been graduating from college this year. She thought of the friends and family she left behind. But most often, she thought of Tom. The one to blame for all of this. The guy who had flipped her life upside down.
She had met him in the fall of her sophomore year. Everyone had left to go visit their family for the holidays, but Megan stayed behind. She wandered around the deserted campus with nothing but time to waste. She was walking across the lawn when she heard someone yelling.
"Hey! You! Stop!" yelled a random voice from the distance.
She immediately turned around. She was desperate to talk someone, even if it was an unfamiliar voice. That's when she saw Tom running towards her.
"Uh..Hi?" answered Megan once he had finally reached her.
Despite the fact that the Megan and Tom had never met before, they began talking and ended up going to a coffee shop outside of campus. Megan had never met anyone like him before. Tom was such a genuine, down-to-earth person. Every moment they had spent together that day was filled with captivating conversation. Megan spent the rest of her break in the company of Tom. They began spending everyday together, even after the break had ended. They were inseparable. There was nobody Megan believed she could trust more than Tom.
Almost a year had passed, and Megan's feelings for Tom only grew stronger. Being with Tom had but her in a trance. It was just all too good to be true. She loved him more than anything, but couldn't help but feel that he didn't truly know her. She had been keeping a secret from him the whole time. It weighed upon her like a ton of bricks on her shoulders. She decided she couldn't keep it from him any longer, and in a moment of impulse she showed him.
It was dark out and she had asked Tom to go on a walk. They walked hand in hand, until she noticed a dead bird lying in the street. She let go of his had and walked over to it. She crouched over the bird, held her had to it and let a combination of words slip from her mouth.
"Tweet, tweet, tweet" chirped the bird seconds later.
She had brought it back from the dead and Tom was there to witness it. He stood in utter silence as he watched the bird fly away in the distance. He didn't say anything for minutes. Silence had filled the air. This wasn't the response Megan had hoped for, but it was far better than the betrayal that was to follow
A car honked from across the street, pulling Megan's attention back to the present. She began to think about which microwave meal she would have for dinner tonight, but in the back of her head she couldn't help put ponder the question, "Would her life ever be normal again?".
